Families Taking On Plastic Challenge
Plastic Is Drastic! Three families recently took on the challenge to become more aware of their use of plastic, and how to reduce it. Sponsored by Krush Wine Country Radio and Heritage Salvage, for three weeks the families tracked their plastic use and reduced it!
The Family Challenge is part of the Plastic Is Drastic campaign to bring attention to the plastic garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean.
Two families, Bode family, Jessica Isaac son Ian(9) and daughter Anya (6) and Butler family, Andy Nell Hergenrather daughters Thora (10), Maisy (8) and Gwen (5) shared their experiences on Krush Green Scene radio.
Both families were amazed when they began paying more attention to the amount of plastic used on a daily basis.
Several habits were changed helping to make a difference in their household use:
-Purchasing cereal and grains in bulk versus boxes and bags
-Using fabric sandwhich and snack bags versus plastic
-Installing water filtration system at home eliminating plastic water bottles
-Going to glass milk bottles instead of plastic
Nell also went out of her way to request that her deli meats and fish not be wrapped in plastic before going into the paper wrapper. This caused a hubbub at her local market until they finally acquiesed.
Both families will continue their new habits and help share with others how to let go of plastic convenience and help do what is good for the earth.
Thank you to Krush radio and the families that partipated, inlcuding the Randy Sue Collins husband Tony son Davis Watkins (17) and daugther Devon (19).
Local students from three schools are making plastic sculptures from the plastic collected from three familes and will be displayed at the PLASTIC IS DRASTIC EXTRAVAGANZA April 30 at the Mystic Theater.
